How Does Micro-Needling Work?
Micro-needling, also referred to as Collagen Induction Therapy, uses your body’s natural healing process to improve the overall quality of the skin and lessen the appearance of wrinkles and scars. It does this using tiny needles that create microchannels, or small holes in the skin. While these holes aren’t large enough to cause harm to your skin, they are large enough to stimulate your body’s healing response. Part of this healing response is the production of collagen and elastin.
What Areas Can it Treat?
Micro-needling can be used on nearly every part of the body. Some of the most common areas that receive treatment are the:
- Face
- Neck
- Decollete
- Arms
- Hands
- Legs
- Abdomen
- Back
In addition to treating specific areas by itself, micro-needling is often used in conjunction with other procedures to increase their effectiveness.
What are the Benefits of Micro-Needling?
Micro-Needling improves nearly every aspect of your skin’s appearance. Some of these improvements include:
- Reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Lessened appearance of scars
- More even skin tone
- Improved skin texture
- Soft, youthful skin
- Improved appearance of hyper pigmentation
PRP and Microneedling
PRP can be used in conjunction with micro-needling to further improve the end result in either facial rejuvenation or hair restoration. Obtaining PRP is actually through the process of taking a small sample of your own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge. PRP is separated from the rest of the blood and is then used to stimulate the body’s natural healing process.
PRP for Facial Rejuvenation
After a micro-needling treatment, the skin’s pores are opened up and are better able to absorb PRP. When PRP is applied to the skin after micro-needling, new skin cells begin to form and blood flow is improved to generate a natural glow, along with an increase in volume to fill out areas that may have lost fatty tissue.
PRP for Hair Restoration
Similar to how PRP can positively affect aging skin, it can also be used to treat premature hair loss. Instead of being applied topically, PRP is injected into the skin where the hair is being lost. PRP stimulates the regrowth of follicles and reactivates follicles that have become inactive. Multiple treatments over the course of a few months may be necessary to achieve the desired results.
What Should I Expect from Treatment?
The intensity and length of micro-needling treatments vary depending upon your pain threshold, as well as the sensitivity and size of the area being treated. Slight discomfort is common in patients during treatment, with each treatment taking anywhere between 5 and 50 minutes.
Following your treatment, you may experience a reddening of the treatment area. This redness is similar to a sunburn, and can last for weeks or days. Post-treatment care is required – your doctor will go into the specifics of this care during your initial consultation.
