Finding an Authorized Doctor
When applicants apply for a green card (adjustment of status) in the United States, they usually need to have a medical examination. The exam must be done by a doctor who is authorized by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). USCIS designates certain doctors (also known as civil surgeons) to perform the medical exam required for most Green Card applicants.
What to Bring to the Exam:
- Government-issued photo identification, such as a valid passport or driver’s license.
- Vaccination or immunization record such as Tetanus, MMR and Flu (if during flu season).

During the Exam
The doctor will test applicants who are 15 years and older for communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis and gonorrhea. Tuberculosis and syphilis are tested via blood. While the gonorrhea is tested via urine.
Applicants who are 2-14 years old will only be tested for tuberculosis via blood test.
After the Exam
Once all tests are completed, the doctor will send the specimen collected to a laboratory and should receive results between 5-7 business days. Upon reviewing the results, the doctor will complete Form I-693 and seal the form in an envelope for the applicant to submit to USCIS. Applicants will receive a copy of the completed Form I-693 for personal records. USCIS will not accept the form if the envelope has been opened or altered. The clinic will keep a copy of the applicant’s results and I-693 form for up to five years.
